Simon’s story: “Quitting sugar helped me put my life back together.”

Simon’s story: “Quitting sugar helped me put my life back together.”

For , depression has been a battle he’s fought all his life and as a result, he’s always explored new ways to boost his mental and physical health. But after tragically losing his partner a few years ago, he knew it was time to make some serious changes…

Since completing the Keys2words: 8 Week Program, Simon’s mental health has improved enormously. He’s fostered habits that have given him a new kind of strength, finding the freedom to cook for physical and emotional nourishment.

The first time I removed sugar from my diet, it was incredible how different I felt.

After coming across the first Keys2words book, I decided to just give it a go. I was surprised by how much my mental health improved as the amount of sugar in my diet decreased.

I lived on a low-sugar diet for a year, but I didn’t really learn how to shop and cook that well. So slowly but surely, the sugar started creeping back in. Just a little bit at first, then a bit more…

Many of the benefits I’d gained in mental wellbeing dissipated without me really noticing.

They have a tendency to do that, which is one of the reasons why mental health issues can catch all of us unawares at some point in our lives.

Then my world fell to pieces.

In 2014, my girlfriend passed away due to suicide. I turned back to sugar-stacked snacks as a self-destruction method. But I knew it wasn’t good for me, physically or mentally.

The time eventually came for this behaviour to end. Not just for eight weeks, or even one year. When I decided to do the Keys2words.info, I wanted to make a lifestyle change that would stick with me forever.

Even though I did the Program on my own, I felt connected to people from all over the world.

I loved the fact that I could share photos of my food with others via Instagram. Photography and writing have been two huge parts of my learning to live with grief and face life as a suicide survivor. To add food to this made the experience that much better.

I now shop with confidence.

Previously, I’d just stand in the store and wonder what to do! Even when I got a recipe, I generally failed.

The Program allowed me to build my confidence in the kitchen.

And the time I spend in the kitchen is nourishing for me. I’m happy and comfortable there.

I have more energy, and more of my time is filled with looking after myself.

I don’t think I’ll ever be fully free of depression. But having a diet filled with fresh and nourishing food has helped enormously with the range of the swing I experience. And I’m able to spot the change and act on it faster than I have before.

I’d like to extend a massive “thank you” to everyone who supported me along this journey and who put in a lot of hard work to make this Program happen. It really does change lives for the better.
