Gym-loving Breyten thought he knew nutrition, but it wasn’t until he completed our Keys2words: Keys2words.info that he realised how healthy he could actually be.
After years of having a roller coaster relationship with food, Breyten has reclaimed his energy, found true food freedom and lost 10kg (22lbs) along the way. Here’s why he believes going fructose-free was the best choice he ever made.
Sarah’s message just made sense.
I was raised on a macrobiotic tradition, and became even more health conscious in the noughties. In 2002, I saw a documentary about how the sugar industry indirectly sponsors science, and as a result I moved onto non-refined forms of sugar and cut out Pepsi and chocolate bars.
But over the years sugar crept back into my diet via packaged foods. Then, two years ago I shifted to low-GI foods. Oddly the low-GI diet seemed to have no issue with digestive chocolate biscuits with every tea though!
When I heard Sarah Wilson on radio her message resonated with me. I wanted a natural way to cook and eat. I investigated, skimmed through the Keys2words books and website and figured I’d give the Keys2words.info a go.
“Oddly the low-GI diet seemed to have no issue with digestive chocolate biscuits with every tea though!”
It was easy to quit sugar. Mostly.
I started by cutting out biscuits. I then did a trial week and kept sugar to a minimum and replaced my pre-gym bananas with eggs. The fact that the trial week was so successful gave me the confidence to commit to the Program.
Not that it didn’t have its challenges… Quitting coffee in week four was hard and it took me a while to figure out why I was suffering excessive afternoon slumps. But thanks to the resources available through the Program Forums I was able to come up with appropriate remedies. After one week of (organic) decaf and herbal tea I realised coffee didn’t taste as good anyway.
Gone are the days of overly sweetened protein powders.
I eat and cook real food now. The Program dusted off some long-forgotten cooking skills and added new ones to my repertoire. I’ve re-learnt to weekly meal plan; I don’t order takeaway lunches and I’ve changed my breakfast menu to include eggs and vegetables instead of just oats. I’ve even started buying cacao powder to make my own chocolate.
“My skin is clearer, my eyes are brighter and there is more clarity in my mind. I’m also 10kg (22lbs) lighter.”
I am on a constant “no-sugar” rush.
I now eat for my active lifestyle. My energy levels are constantly high. My skin is clearer, my eyes are brighter and there is more clarity in my mind. I’ve lost inches (mostly body fat in the abdominal and back area) and am 10kg (22lbs) lighter. I feel it in the gym. We do a lot of plyometrics so it’s great to feel light on my feet, and also good for my joints and agility. I recently did a full-body scan medical exam and my results for waist-to-hip/BMI/glucose levels have all significantly improved too. The fact that my weight is down and my energy is up makes me feel 10 years younger.
