When it comes to finding simple ways to make self-care a more prominent part of your life, eating well is arguably one of the easiest ways to do so!

Making healthy food choices is a – virtually effortless – way to take care of yourself, both physically and mentally. By listening to your body and providing it with the nourishing foods that it truly craves, you are actually treating yourself with the love, care and kindness you deserve.

While choosing to enjoy a healthy, nutrient-dense diet is a great act of self-care in itself, there are a few other ways you can support this concept even further…

Mindful eating.

Mindfulness is the practice of being completely present in each moment and is a concept that can also be applied to the way in which you eat. Eating in a mindful way involves sitting down to each meal without distractions, focusing solely on the food that you’re consuming and acknowledging the thoughts and feelings that come naturally with each bite. Mindful eating will help you to develop a deeper connection with your diet and to be more conscious of the food choices that you make.

Avoiding emotional eating.

Unfortunately, it can be all too easy to slip into emotional eating habits – you experience a negative emotion and you feel as though certain foods will help to alleviate these unwanted feelings. Although this may seem to work temporarily, negative feelings can soon resurface as well as the additional guilt and shame connected to the emotional eating itself. When you feel as though you want to soothe negative feelings with food, choose to engage in a self-care activity instead. Here are a few ideas…

  • Take a hot bath with scented candles.

  • Go for a walk in nature.

  • Sip a cup of herbal tea.

  • Get stuck into your favourite exercise routine!

The link between self-care and eating well…

When you make a conscious effort to keep self-care at the forefront of your mind, then your eating habits will naturally become more balanced. And, the reverse is also true! Following a healthy diet can enhance your mood – making it more likely that you will care for yourself in other ways.
